About

About the Vishnu Shastranaam Paath with Pandit Ji

Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama takes steady pronunciation and the right opening and closing prayers, and many families would like help with both. A pandit leads the recitation, so you can sit, listen and join in.

The Vishnu Sahasranama is a hymn of a thousand names of Vishnu, found in the Mahabharata. Many families recite it on Thursdays, Ekadashi or at the start of a new phase. Others hold it as a family gathering. The exact format varies by family.

Families who follow Vishnu worship; people marking a milestone or new beginning; households who want a recitation in a group setting.

Many families choose a Thursday or Ekadashi, or a date that suits the household. Your pandit can suggest a time. Follow your family's custom.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a focused recitation. Choose the extended ceremony if you want the fuller opening prayers or a larger gathering.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself, and ask the pandit for the list in advance.

Family members who wish to listen or read along. One or more members of the household sit for the sankalp.

Some families follow the version from the Mahabharata, with their own opening and closing verses. Tell us your tradition when booking.

This ritual uses a diya or lamp and often camphor. Keep the flame on a stable, heat-safe surface away from curtains, children and pets, and keep a little water nearby.

Is Shastranaam the same as Sahasranama? Sahasranama is the usual spelling. It means a thousand names. Tell the pandit if your family uses a different text.

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard ceremony and about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

Do I have to do it on a Thursday? Many families choose Thursday, but it is not a rule for all.

Can family read along? Yes, many families do. Tell the pandit if you would like that.
