About

About the Garud Puran Paath with Pandit Ji

When someone has passed, families are asked to arrange many things quickly, and the paath is one more thing they want to get right. A pandit who knows how the recitation is organised can lead it, so the family can sit together and listen rather than manage it.

The Garuda Purana is a Vaishnava text, and many families have it read or heard during the mourning period after a death, alongside shraddha rites. Traditionally the listening is meant as a time for remembrance and reflection. Practice differs: some families read it over several days, others hold a single sitting.

Families observing the mourning period after the loss of a relative; households whose custom includes a Garuda Purana sitting around the terahvi or shraddha; relatives who want a pandit to lead the recitation instead of reading it themselves.

Many families hold it during the 13-day period after a death, or around the terahvi, but customs vary widely by community and family. Some families avoid reading it at other times. Your family elders and pandit can guide the dates, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 1.5 hours for the standard ceremony; about 2 hours for the extended one.

If you want a single, shorter sitting with close family, start with the standard. If elders expect more of the text to be read, choose the extended sitting, or ask the pandit what your tradition usually follows.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to arrange them yourself; the pandit can share the list in advance.

Close family and relatives of the departed. Traditionally the immediate family sits for the full recitation, but others are welcome to listen for as long as they like.

Sequences, chapters chosen and the days of recitation differ by community and region, and by whether the text is read in Sanskrit or Hindi. Tell us your family's custom and preferred language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

Is this only done after a death? It is most commonly heard during the mourning period, and some families avoid reading it at other times. Ask your family elders and the pandit about your custom.

How long should we plan for? About 1.5 hours for the standard sitting and about 2 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.

Can the recitation be spread over several days? Many families do this. Share your plan when you book and the pandit will say what is possible.

Can we do it on video if relatives are abroad? It can work, with the pandit leading on video and a family member at home arranging the lamp and seating. Confirm at booking.
