About

About the Geeta Govindam Paath with Pandit Ji

Families who want Gita Govinda at home often struggle to find someone who can recite the Sanskrit verses with the right rhythm and explain them. A pandit familiar with the text can lead the recitation, so you can simply listen and join in where you wish.

Geeta Govindam is the 12th-century Sanskrit poem by Jayadeva on the love of Radha and Krishna. It is arranged in 12 sargas, with ashtapadis traditionally sung as devotional songs, notably in Odisha and Kerala. Families often have it recited as an act of devotion, at festivals or on family occasions.

Devotees of Krishna who want a sitting at home; families marking a festival such as Janmashtami; people who follow the Odisha, Bengal or Kerala traditions of singing the ashtapadis; those who want to begin a new venture or a home with a devotional recitation.

There is no single fixed date. Many families choose Janmashtami, a Thursday or Ekadashi, or any day that suits the family. The pandit can suggest a muhurat on request, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

If you want a shorter devotional sitting, start with the standard. If you want more of the poem recited or a fuller ritual frame, choose the extended sitting.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to arrange them yourself; the pandit can share the list in advance.

The household and anyone who enjoys devotional music. Families often invite friends and elders to sit and listen, and children are welcome.

The way the ashtapadis are sung differs, for instance in the Odisha and Kerala styles, and families have their own tunes and favourite passages. Tell us your tradition when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

Do I need to understand Sanskrit? No. The pandit can explain the meaning in simple Hindi or English if you ask.

How long will it take? About 1 hour for the standard sitting and about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

Is it sung or recited? Practice varies. Many pandits chant the verses, and some sing the ashtapadis. Tell us your preference when you book.

Can we do it on video? Yes, a live video sitting works well. The pandit leads and you follow at home with a lamp and an image of Krishna.
