About

About the Sunderkand Paath with Pandit Ji

Hosting a paath means getting the seating, the text, the right person to recite and the order of prayers sorted before guests arrive. A pandit leads the recitation and the opening and closing prayers, so the family can simply sit, listen and join in.

The Sunderkand is the book of the Ramcharitmanas that follows Hanuman's journey to Lanka and his meeting with Sita. Many families hold a recitation at home on occasions that matter to them, and some choose Tuesdays or Saturdays because of the link with Hanuman. Others read it on any convenient day.

Families marking a new beginning, a housewarming, a birthday or an anniversary; households who hold a regular paath; people who want a recitation in a group setting with relatives and neighbours.

Families commonly pick a Tuesday or Saturday, or a date that suits the household, often in the morning or evening. Your pandit can suggest a time. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 1 hour for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a focused recitation with family. Choose the extended ceremony if you want the fuller opening prayers or a larger gathering. Confirm timing with the pandit either way.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself, and ask the pandit for the list in advance.

Family members and friends who wish to listen or read along. Traditionally one or more people from the household sit for the sankalp, while others join for the recitation and aarti.

Some families recite from the Ramcharitmanas, others from the Valmiki Ramayana's Sundara Kanda, and the opening and closing prayers vary by region. Tell us your preference when booking.

This ritual uses a diya or lamp and often camphor. Keep the flame on a stable, heat-safe surface away from curtains, children and pets, and keep a little water nearby.

How long does the paath take? The standard is listed at about 2 hours. Timing for the extended ceremony will be confirmed with the pandit, as it depends on how much is added.

Does it have to be on a Tuesday or Saturday? Not necessarily. Many families choose those days, but others read on any convenient day. Follow your family's custom.

Can family members join the recitation? Yes, in most households the family reads or sings along, especially the Hanuman Chalisa. Tell the pandit if you would like that.

Do we need a havan? A havan is not a standard part of a paath in every family. If you would like one, ask the pandit when booking.
