About

About the Akhand Ramayan Paath with Pandit Ji

An Akhand Paath is one of the hardest things to organise at home: it runs without a break for many hours, needs trained readers in shifts, and everything from the lamp to the seating has to be ready before it starts. A pandit team takes over the reading and the vidhi, so your family can focus on hosting and being present.

Akhand Ramayan Paath is the uninterrupted recitation of the Ramayan, and many North Indian families read Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas for it. Families traditionally hold it for occasions such as a new home, a milestone, thanksgiving or in remembrance. Customs differ on the text, the pace and the closing rituals.

Families marking a griha pravesh, a business opening, a milestone or a thanksgiving; households that hold it as a yearly or vow-based family practice; families who want a large, shared devotional gathering at home or at a venue.

Families usually pick a date and start time from the panchang, often starting in the morning so the reading finishes the next morning. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

About 24 hours for both the standard and the extended ceremony, with the reading running continuously in shifts.

Choose the standard if your family wants the paath itself with the essential pooja. Choose the extended if you expect many guests, want the fuller closing, or your family follows the longer format.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

Video may be possible for the paath, but a continuous multi-pandit format is long, so it needs confirming with us first. Tell us at the time of booking and we will check with the pandit team.

The household or the host couple should be present for the opening and the closing. Family and friends can join during the paath as they like, and most gather for the aarti and prasad.

Some families read the Valmiki Ramayan, others the Ramcharitmanas; the pace, the shifts and the closing rituals vary by region and family. Tell us your tradition and preferred text when booking.

A diya or lamp is an open flame. Keep it on a stable surface, away from curtains, children and pets, and never leave it unattended. A havan at the end needs ventilation and water close by.

How long does an Akhand Ramayan Paath take? Plan for about 24 hours of continuous reading, plus set-up time before and the closing rituals after.

Which text is read? Practice varies. Many North Indian families read Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, others the Valmiki Ramayan. Tell us your preference when you book.

Can it be done in an apartment? Many families do. It helps to inform neighbours and check building rules, as reading may continue through the night.

Do we have to stay awake all night? No. The pandits read in shifts. Family members usually join for the opening, the closing and as they are able in between.

What is the difference between the two options? The standard uses four pandits; the extended uses six and adds more recitations and a fuller closing.
