About

About the Satyanarayan Katha with Pandit Ji

Satyanarayan Katha is one of the most familiar family pujas, but hosting it still takes work: the prasad, the items, the katha, the guests. A pandit leads the puja and recites the katha, and you host.

Satyanarayan is a form of Vishnu, and the katha tells stories of devotees and the importance of truthfulness and keeping one's word. Many families hold it for a new beginning, a milestone or simply as a family tradition.

Families moving into a new home; couples after a wedding or anniversary; people starting a business or a new job; families marking a milestone or holding it regularly on Purnima.

Many families hold it on Purnima, but it is also done on other days, in the morning or evening. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 3 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a family gathering. Choose the extended one if you follow the fuller vidhi or are hosting a larger group.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself; the pandit can share a list before the day.

Traditionally the couple or head of the household sits, but families decide. Other family and guests are welcome to listen to the katha and take prasad.

The katha, prasad and sequence differ between North Indian, Gujarati, Maharashtrian, Bengali and South Indian households. Some call it Satyanarayana Vratham. Tell us your tradition when booking.

The puja uses a lit diya and, in the extended version, a havan. Keep flames on a stable surface away from curtains and children, and keep water nearby.

How long should I plan for? About 2 hours for the standard ceremony and about 3 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.

Does it have to be on Purnima? Many families choose Purnima, but it is also held on other days. Your pandit can advise.

Can we hold it for a housewarming? Yes, many families do. Some combine it with Griha Pravesh.

What if our family follows a different sequence? Your family's custom takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.
