About

About the Griha Pravesh Puja with Pandit Ji

Moving into a new home is a long to-do list, and the pooja is one more thing families want to get right: the order, the samagri, the timing. A pandit takes the vidhi off your shoulders so you can stand at your own doorway and be present for it.

Griha Pravesh is the traditional ceremony of entering a new home for the first time. Many families mark it with prayers to Ganesha and the household deities, a kalash, and a havan, as a way of beginning life in a space with intention and sharing it with those who matter. How elaborate it is varies by region and family.

Families moving into a newly built or newly bought home; people returning after major renovation; tenants who want a simple first pooja in a rented home; first-time homeowners who have not hosted a ritual before.

Most families choose a muhurat from the panchang before moving in, often in the morning. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

About 3 hours for the standard ceremony; about 5 hours for the extended one.

If you want the essential ceremony and your gathering is small, start with the standard. If elders expect the fuller vidhi or you are hosting many guests, choose the extended ceremony.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to arrange them yourself; the pandit can share the list in advance. The Vedic Rituals Grah Pravesh Kit packs the essentials in ritual order if you want to arrange samagri yourself without the shopping list.

The household members moving in. Traditionally the couple or the head of the household sits for the main rituals, but families decide this. Guests can join for the aarti and prasad.

Sequences differ across North Indian, Maharashtrian, Bengali, Gujarati and South Indian households, including customs such as boiling milk. Tell us your tradition and language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

This ritual involves an open flame (havan or diya). Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.

How long should I plan for? About 3 hours for the standard ceremony and about 5 hours for the extended one, plus setup time.

Do we need to move in before the pooja? Families differ. Many hold it at the muhurat before settling in. Your pandit can advise based on your date and tradition.

Can we do it in a rented home? Yes. Many tenants hold a simpler Griha Pravesh, and the standard ceremony is a good fit.

What if our family follows a different sequence? Your family's sequence takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.
