About

About the Vehicle Worship with Pandit Ji

You have just picked up a new vehicle, and the question comes up: when, what, and who does the puja. A pandit leads a short ceremony right at the vehicle, so you can start the journey with a ritual your family recognises.

Vahan puja is a tradition of worshipping a new vehicle before it is used regularly. Families usually offer prayers to Ganesh, and sometimes to the vehicle itself, with tilak, a swastika, flowers, a coconut and often a lemon. It is also done on festival days such as Dussehra, as a thanksgiving for existing vehicles.

People who have just bought a car, scooter, bike or commercial vehicle; business owners with a new fleet; families who do an annual puja for their vehicles.

Many families do it on the day of delivery or on a muhurat date, such as Dussehra, Dhanteras or Akshaya Tritiya. Your pandit can suggest options. Follow your family's custom.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1 hour for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a single vehicle and a short puja. Choose the extended ceremony if you want more steps or are worshipping more than one vehicle. Both are listed at about the same time.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself, and ask the pandit for the list in advance. The Vedic Rituals New Car Pooja Kit packs the essentials in ritual order if you are worshipping a car and want to arrange samagri yourself.

Vehicle Worship is best done with the pandit present in person, so video is not offered for it.

The vehicle's owner and family. The pandit performs the puja at the vehicle, so it needs to be present.

Customs differ across regions, for example whether a lemon is placed under the wheel, how the coconut is broken, and which deities are invoked. Tell us your tradition when booking.

The puja uses a diya or camphor and often a coconut. Keep flames well away from the fuel tank and engine, do the puja in an open and ventilated place, keep the vehicle in neutral with the handbrake on, and keep children back when the coconut is broken.

Does the vehicle have to be present? Yes. The pandit performs the puja at the vehicle, so video is not offered.

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for both the standard and the extended ceremony.

Can it be done for a two-wheeler? Yes. The puja works for cars, bikes, scooters and commercial vehicles.

Should I do it before the first drive? Many families do. Your family's custom takes priority.
