About

About the Surya Japam with Pandit Ji

Japam sounds simple until you try to keep count, hold the pronunciation and stay in the right order. A pandit leads the chanting and the surrounding prayers, so your attention can stay on the mantra rather than the method.

Japam is the repeated chanting of a mantra, here dedicated to Surya, the Sun. Many families associate the Sun with vitality and discipline and choose Surya japam on Sundays, at the start of a new phase, or on days connected to the Sun. The number of repetitions and the choice of mantra vary by tradition.

Families who follow Surya upasana; people starting a new year, job or venture who want to begin with a japam; households whose astrologer has suggested Surya mantras as part of their routine.

Many families choose a Sunday, often in the morning near sunrise, but practice varies. Your pandit can suggest a time. For chart-based questions, please consult your family astrologer.

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 3 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a single sitting with a focused count. Choose the extended ceremony if you want more time with the opening prayers, or a larger japam count. Confirm the count with the pandit.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself, and ask the pandit for the list in advance.

The person or household for whom the japam is being done. Family members may sit along and join in the chanting if they wish.

Mantras, counts and accompanying texts such as Aditya Hridayam differ by family and lineage. Share your family's practice when booking.

This ritual uses a diya or lamp and often camphor. Keep the flame on a stable, heat-safe surface away from curtains, children and pets, and keep a little water nearby.

How long does it take? About 2 hours for the standard ceremony and about 3 hours for the extended one, depending on the count agreed.

Do I have to do it on a Sunday? Many families choose Sunday, but it is not a rule for everyone. Your pandit can suggest a day.

Who counts the japam? The pandit keeps the count, and you can sit and listen or chant along.

Should I check my chart before booking? If you are choosing japam because of a chart reading, please speak to your family astrologer first. The pandit leads the ritual but does not interpret charts.
