About

About the Kali Puja with Pandit Ji

A Kali puja has customs that differ a lot between families, and many are unsure about the offerings and the order. A pandit who follows your tradition leads the vidhi so you can focus on the evening.

Kali is revered in many traditions as a fierce form of the goddess, associated with time and change in Shakta belief. In Bengal and Eastern India, Kali Puja is observed on the new moon night in the month of Kartik, often the same night as Diwali. Many families also hold a Kali puja on other occasions.

Bengali, Odia and Assamese families who observe Kali Puja; devotees of the goddess who want a home puja; families who follow the Shakta tradition.

Traditionally on the new moon (Amavasya) night in Kartik, with the main worship late in the night in many Bengali households. Other families choose a different time. The pandit can suggest a muhurat, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

If you want the essential puja, start with the standard. If your family follows the fuller vidhi, choose the extended puja.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to arrange them yourself; the pandit can share the list in advance.

The household. Traditionally the head of the household sits, but families decide this. Others can join for the aarti and prasad.

Offerings, the form of worship and the timing differ a lot between Bengali, Odia, Assamese and other households. Tell us your tradition when booking.

This ritual involves an open flame (havan or diya). Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.

Is Kali Puja only on Diwali night? It is commonly observed then in Eastern India, but families choose other days too. Your family's custom takes priority.

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard puja and about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

What offerings are needed? They vary by family. The pandit will share a list based on your tradition.

Can we do it on video? Yes, a live video puja works well. The pandit leads and you follow at home with the altar and lamp.
