About

About the Janeu Sanskar with Pandit Ji

A janeu ceremony has many parts, and families feel the pressure of getting the order, the samagri and the timing right. A pandit takes charge of the vidhi so the family can focus on the child and the occasion.

Janeu Sanskar, or Upanayana, is a traditional sanskar in which a young person is invested with the sacred thread (yajnopavita) and taught the Gayatri mantra. Many families mark it as the start of formal learning and the traditional duties of the community. Who undertakes it, at what age and with what rituals depends on the family and community.

Families whose custom includes the thread ceremony for sons; parents planning the ceremony for a boy at the age their tradition prefers; adults who are taking the thread for the first time.

Families usually choose a muhurat from the panchang, often in the spring and early summer months, but customs vary. The pandit can suggest muhurat options, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 1.5 hours for the standard ceremony; about 2 hours for the extended one.

If you want the essential ceremony with close family, start with the standard. If your tradition follows the fuller vidhi or you are hosting a larger gathering, choose the extended ceremony.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to arrange them yourself; the pandit can share the list in advance.

The child or person receiving the thread, his parents and close relatives. Elders often join as witnesses.

The age, the order, the mantras and the length of the ceremony differ widely across communities and regions. A full traditional Upanayana can run longer than the options here. Tell us your tradition when booking.

This ritual involves an open flame (havan or diya). Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.

At what age is it usually done? It varies by community and family. Your family's custom takes priority.

How long should I plan for? About 1.5 hours for the standard ceremony and about 2 hours for the extended one. A fuller traditional ceremony can run longer.

Do we need to have a havan? Many families do. If your venue does not allow it, talk to the pandit.

Can we do it on video? It can work, but the ceremony involves close physical rituals, so confirm with us before you book.
