About

About the Annaprashan Puja with Pandit Ji

Planning a baby's first solid food ceremony means juggling feeding schedules, guests, an outfit, and a ritual you only do once. A pandit leads the vidhi at a calm pace, so you can focus on the baby and the family.

Annaprashan is the traditional sanskar marking a baby's first taste of solid food, most often rice or kheer. Many families hold it at around six months, though the timing differs by region and family. It is a family moment: the baby is fed a first morsel, often by parents and elders.

Parents of babies starting solids; grandparents who want the family sanskar observed; families in the diaspora or in another city who want a pandit-led ceremony at home.

Many families hold it around the sixth month, and some by the family's own rule on months or the baby's gender. Families often choose a muhurat from the panchang, and a time when the baby is rested and fed. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 3 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard if the baby will need to be fed and settled in a shorter time. Choose the extended if elders expect the fuller vidhi and a havan.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

The baby's parents, and traditionally grandparents and close relatives, who often offer the first morsel. Families decide who feeds the baby for themselves.

The first food, the month, who feeds the baby, and the items offered (rice, kheer, even objects to choose from) differ across Bengali, Maharashtrian, Malayali, North Indian and other families. Tell us your tradition when booking.

The ceremony involves a lamp and, in the extended format, a havan with an open flame. Keep it well away from the baby, curtains and pets. Introduce solids as your paediatrician advises.

At what age is Annaprashan held? Many families hold it around six months, but the month differs by family and region. Follow your custom and your paediatrician's advice on starting solids.

What does the baby eat? Often rice or kheer. Families differ, so check with your elders. The food is usually prepared without salt.

How long should we plan for? About 2 hours for the standard and about 3 hours for the extended, plus a little time for set-up.

Can the baby be present throughout? Many families bring the baby for the main parts and let them rest in between. Your pandit can keep the baby's parts at a comfortable time.

Can it be done online? Yes. A relative or helper at home can assist the family while the pandit leads on video.
