About the Chheka Ceremony with Pandit Ji

A chheka is often planned in a hurry, with two families, many elders and a long list of customs to get right. A pandit who knows the vidhi keeps the ceremony in order and guides both sides, so the families can focus on each other.

Chheka is a traditional pre-wedding ceremony in many North Indian families, where the two sides formally acknowledge the match. It usually includes prayers, tilak, exchange of gifts and sweets, and the blessings of elders. What it is called and what it includes vary widely by community.

Families of a couple whose match has been agreed; families who want a simple religious ceremony before engagement or wedding plans proceed; hosts who want a pandit to keep the customs in order.

Many families pick a date with the help of a pandit or astrologer, often by matching the panchang with convenient dates. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options. Your family's custom takes priority.

About 1.5 hours for the standard ceremony; about 2 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a small gathering with a simple custom. Choose the extended if both families follow a fuller set of rituals.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

Immediate family from both sides, with the couple usually present. Elders often take the lead in the exchanges. Extended family and guests can join.

Chheka goes by different names (roka, tilak, sagai and others) and its customs differ by region and community. Tell us both families' traditions and language when booking.

The ritual uses diyas and incense. Keep lamps on a stable surface, away from curtains and decorations, and keep children and pets at a safe distance.

Is chheka the same as roka or engagement? Practice varies. In some families they are the same ceremony, in others they are separate. Your family's custom decides.

How long should I plan for? About 1.5 hours for the standard and about 2 hours for the extended ceremony, plus time for hosting.

Do both families need to be present? Usually yes, but families do it differently. Some hold it with a smaller group.

Can we do it on video? It can work if one side is in another city, but the exchange of items needs coordination with both families.

Who arranges the gifts? The families do. The pandit can guide on the customary items if you ask.
