About

About the Saraswati Homam with Pandit Ji

Students, parents and artists often want to mark a new academic year or exam season with a homam. The preparation, though, is the real hurdle: samagri, kund, mantras, timing. A pandit leads the sequence and you sit for it.

Saraswati is traditionally the goddess of learning, speech and the arts. A homam to her involves Saraswati mantras and offerings into the sacred fire. Many families hold it at the start of a school year, before exams or at the beginning of a new study or creative pursuit.

Students and their parents; teachers and schools; musicians, writers and artists; families starting a child's schooling or a new course.

Many families choose Vasant Panchami, the start of an academic year, Navratri or Thursdays and Fridays, but customs differ. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a compact homam, for example before a school year. Choose the extended one if your family follows the fuller vidhi.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself; the pandit can share a list before the day. The Vedic Rituals Havan Pooja Kit covers general havan essentials if you arrange samagri yourself; deity-specific items can differ, so check the list with your pandit.

The student or family members sitting for the homam, with parents or elders. Students can join for the offerings as the family prefers.

Saraswati worship differs between North Indian, Bengali and South Indian households, including the mantras and offerings used. Tell us your tradition when booking.

Homam involves an open fire. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard ceremony and about 1.5 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.

Can a child sit for the homam? Many families have children sit with an adult. Please keep them well away from the fire.

What can we place near the Devi? Many families place books, pens or musical instruments. Your pandit can advise.

What if our family follows a different sequence? Your family's custom takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.
