About

About the Brahmin Bhoj with Pandit Ji

Hosting a Brahmin Bhoj means more than cooking: the seating, the order of offerings, the dakshina. A pandit leads the short ritual around the meal, so you know what to do and when.

Brahmin Bhoj is the traditional offering of a meal to a brahmin, often with a small pooja before the meal and dakshina after it. Families hold it on occasions such as a shraddha, a milestone or in thanksgiving. Practice varies.

Families completing a vrat, a pooja or shraddha; people who offer a bhoj as a thanksgiving or in remembrance; families who want guidance on the order of the ritual.

Many families hold it on the day of the occasion, often around midday. Your pandit can suggest a time. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a simple bhoj. Choose the extended if your family follows the fuller vidhi.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself. The meal itself is arranged by the family.

This ritual is best done with the pandit present, so video is not offered.

The host and family members who serve. Families decide who sits for the rituals.

The meal, the order of rituals and the dakshina differ by family, region and the occasion. Tell us the occasion and your custom when booking.

A diya or lamp is an open flame. Keep it on a stable surface, away from curtains, children and pets, and never leave it unattended.

Who arranges the meal? The family. The pandit leads the ritual around it.

What kind of food is served? Usually a simple satvik vegetarian meal, but families follow their own custom.

How is dakshina decided? It is offered by the family according to their custom and means. Your pandit can guide you on the usual practice.

Can it be held as part of another pooja? Yes. Many families hold it after a pooja, a vrat udyapan or shraddha.

Can it be done on video? This ritual is best done with the pandit present, so video is not offered.
