About

About the Subramanya Homam with Pandit Ji

A homam needs samagri, a kund, the right mantras and someone who knows the sequence. If it is not part of your daily practice, that is a lot to arrange. A pandit leads the homam, and you sit for the ritual.

Subramanya, also known as Murugan, Kartikeya or Skanda, is traditionally honoured as the son of Shiva and Parvati and as a commander of the gods. A homam to him involves mantras and offerings into the sacred fire. It is especially common in South Indian households.

Families who worship Subramanya or Murugan; those following a family tradition, for example on Skanda Shashti or Thaipusam; households holding it at a milestone or as advised by a guru or astrologer.

Many families choose Tuesdays, Shashti, Krittika or Skanda Shashti, but customs differ. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city, and your family's custom takes priority.

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

Choose the standard for a compact homam. Choose the extended one if your family follows the fuller chanting or you have more guests.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself; the pandit can share a list before the day. The Vedic Rituals Havan Pooja Kit covers general havan essentials if you arrange samagri yourself; deity-specific items can differ, so check the list with your pandit.

The person or couple sitting for the homam, with other family members welcome to join. Traditionally the head of the household sits at the kund, but families decide.

Practice differs between Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayali and North Indian households, and some use a specific text or mantra set. Tell us your tradition when booking.

Homam involves an open fire. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard ceremony and about 1.5 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.

Is Subramanya the same as Murugan and Kartikeya? Many traditions treat them as names of the same deity, with regional differences in how he is depicted and worshipped.

Can it be done on any day? Many families choose a favoured day such as a Tuesday or Shashti. Your pandit can advise.

What if our family follows a different sequence? Your family's custom takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.
