About

About the Maha Shivratri with Pandit Ji

Shivratri asks for a lot at once: the fast, the abhishek, the right items and a pooja done at the right hour. A pandit leads the vidhi, so you can focus on the offerings and the night rather than the sequence.

Maha Shivratri is the annual night dedicated to Shiva, observed on the Chaturdashi of the dark fortnight in Phalguna (Magha in some calendars). Many families fast, offer water, milk and bilva leaves to the Shivling, chant Om Namah Shivaya and keep part of the night in prayer. Customs vary across regions.

Families keeping Shivratri at home; devotees who want a pandit-led abhishek; first-time hosts; people living away from family who want to observe it.

The pooja is traditionally held in the evening or night, often in four prahars, though many families do one sitting. Timing depends on the panchang for your city, so your pandit can suggest a muhurat. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 4 hours for the extended one.

If you want the essential pooja and abhishek, the standard is enough. If your family follows the fuller Rudrabhishek or you are hosting many guests, the extended gives more time and a second pandit.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

The household members; the head of the household or those observing the vrat traditionally sit for the abhishek, but families decide this for themselves. Guests can join for the aarti.

Shaiva, Smarta, Kashmiri (Herath), South Indian and North Indian families all observe Shivratri differently, including the number of prahars and the offerings. Tell us your tradition and language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

Diyas involve an open flame. If you are fasting, keep to what is comfortable for your health, and speak to your doctor if you are pregnant, unwell or on medication. Keep the abhishek area dry underfoot to avoid slipping.

How long should I plan for? About 2 hours for the standard ceremony and about 4 hours for the extended one, plus setup time.

Do we have to fast? Many families do, but it is a personal choice. Please follow what is comfortable for your health.

Do we need a Shivling? Many families use one, but your pandit can advise if you have a picture or a different murti.

Can we do the pooja in the evening instead of all night? Yes. Many families hold one sitting in the evening. Your pandit can suggest a muhurat.

Can we do it on video? Yes, usually. You arrange the samagri and a helper at home, and the pandit leads on video.
