Before a move, a reopening or a family milestone, many people want to start with a clean slate, but nobody is sure what the ritual should include or in what order. A pandit leads the sequence, so you can focus on the space and the people in it.
Why it is done
Suddhikaran means purification. Traditionally families have used shuddhi rituals with water, mantras and a havan to mark a fresh start for a home, a workplace or a person, for example after a long period of non-use or a major family event. What it involves varies by family and region.
Who it is for
Families about to move into or reopen a home; owners starting a new shop or office; households marking a fresh start after renovation; anyone whose family custom includes a shuddhi ritual at a transition point.
When to do it
Many families pick a morning on a date from the panchang. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city. If your family has its own custom or a prescribed day, that takes priority.
Choose your ceremony
About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.
- Live video puja: A live video Suddhikaran Puja works if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You arrange the samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the setup and the offerings easier.
- Standard: The standard ceremony: a purification sequence with ganesh pooja, sankalp, kalash and navagraha prayers, shuddhi mantras and a short havan. About 1 hour, 12 vidhi steps, led by one pandit.
- Extended: The extended ceremony: the same stages with more steps and more time at each, including a fuller round of purification mantras and offerings. About 1.5 hours, 18 vidhi steps, led by one pandit.
If you want a simple, focused purification, start with the standard. If elders expect a fuller sequence or the space is large, the extended ceremony gives more time and detail.
Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself, and ask the pandit for the list in advance. The Vedic Rituals Shudhikaran Havan Kit packs the essentials in ritual order if you want to arrange samagri yourself without a shopping list.

How to prepare
- Tidy the space and keep the entrance clear the day before
- Choose the room or area where the main ritual will be held
- Keep a clean surface ready for the kalash and puja items
- Prepare a fire-safe spot for the havan, with ventilation and water nearby
- Share the muhurat with the family and decide who will sit for the ritual
- Decide whether you will use a samagri kit or arrange items yourself
Who should attend
The head of the household or the owner of the space, and family members who wish to join. Others can come for the aarti and prasad.
Your tradition
Practice differs across regions and families, and some communities use the word for specific rites such as shuddhi after a period of mourning. Tell us your tradition and purpose when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.
Safety
Havan and diyas involve an open flame. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.
Questions
How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard ceremony and about 1.5 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.
Is this the same as Vastu Shanti or Griha Pravesh? No. Those are separate ceremonies with their own sequences. Suddhikaran is a purification ritual that some families do on its own or alongside them. Your pandit can advise on combining them.
Can it be done in a rented space or shop? Yes. Many people hold a simple shuddhi ritual when they move into a rented home or open a shop. The standard ceremony usually fits.
Do we need a havan? Many families include one, but practice varies. If your building does not allow an open flame, speak to the pandit about alternatives.
