Organising Ganpati in a housing society means a committee, a schedule, an idol, a pandit and a lot of people to coordinate. Pandit-led sthapana and visarjan take the ritual side off the committee's list, so they can handle everything else.
Why it is done
Ganesh Chaturthi is traditionally the festival of Ganesha's arrival. Many communities install a Ganesh idol, hold daily aarti and immerse it on a chosen day. Sarvajanik celebrations became widespread in Maharashtra and now take place in societies across India.

When to do it
Sthapana is on Ganesh Chaturthi, and visarjan on the day the society chooses, such as 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days later. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city, and the society's custom takes priority.
Choose your ceremony
About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 3 hours for the extended one.
- Standard: The standard ceremony: Sthapana with pran pratishtha, pujan, aarti and prasad; the ritual is about 2 hours. It runs about 2 hours with one pandit and follows a sequence of around 23 vidhi steps.
- Extended: The extended ceremony: A longer sthapana with fuller pujan, more time and a more detailed sequence; about 3 hours. It runs about 3 hours with one pandit and follows a sequence of around 23 vidhi steps.
Choose the standard for a society with a simple programme. Choose the extended ceremony if the committee wants a fuller sthapana or has many residents attending.
Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself; the pandit can share a list before the day.
Video option
Society Ganpati Puja is best done with the pandit present at the venue, so a live video version is not offered.

Who should attend
A few committee members or families sit for the main ritual, and other residents are welcome for the aarti. The pandit is needed on site, and this ritual is not done on video.
