When an astrologer suggests a Shani puja, families are often left with a long list of items, mantras and rules they do not know. A pandit leads the puja and explains each step, so you know what is being done and why.

Why it is done

Shani (Saturn) is one of the navagraha in Jyotish. Families traditionally hold a puja to Shani with abhishek, mantra recitation and a havan when their astrologer points to the planet in their chart. It is a ritual of devotion and does not promise any change in circumstances.

Who it is for

Families advised by their astrologer to hold a Shani puja; people going through a period, such as Sade Sati, that their astrologer has flagged; those who simply worship Shani on Saturdays.

When to do it

Many families choose Saturdays, Shani Jayanti or Amavasya, but your astrologer's advice takes priority. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city. For chart-based questions, please consult your family astrologer.

Choose your ceremony

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 4 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Shani Dosh Nivaran Puja works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the setup easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony: Ganesh pooja, sankalp, navagraha puja, Shani abhishek, mantra jaap, havan and aarti. It runs about 2 hours with one pandit and follows a sequence of around 10 vidhi steps.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony: The same stages with more time, longer mantra jaap and a fuller havan. It runs about 4 hours with one pandit and follows a sequence of around 10 vidhi steps.

Choose the standard if your astrologer has not asked for a specific count of jaap. If they have, choose the extended one and tell the pandit the count.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself; the pandit can share a list before the day.

The sequence

  1. Purification and sankalp
  2. Ganesh pooja to begin
  3. Navagraha puja
  4. Shani Dev abhishek
  5. Shani mantra jaap, with a count as agreed
  6. Havan
  7. Purnahuti
  8. Aarti and prasad

How to prepare

  • Ask your astrologer which mantra and count they suggest
  • Check which items they recommend, such as sesame oil or black sesame
  • Choose an open, ventilated spot for the havan
  • Keep a clean, level surface for the puja items
  • Share your gotra and tradition when booking
  • Decide whether to use pandit-arranged samagri or your own

Who should attend

The person for whom the puja is held, with family members who wish to join. Traditionally the person sits for the main rituals.

Your tradition

Items, mantras and the count of jaap differ by astrologer and lineage. Share your astrologer's guidance with us when booking. For chart-based questions, please consult your family astrologer.

Safety

Havan involves an open flame, and the puja may use oil lamps. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, and keep water nearby.

Questions

How long should I plan for? About 2 hours for the standard ceremony and about 4 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.

Will this puja fix a Shani dosh? No ritual can promise that. The puja is a devotional practice. For chart-based questions, please consult your astrologer.

How is the jaap count decided? It depends on your astrologer or family custom. Tell us the count when booking.

What if our family follows a different sequence? Your family's custom takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.
