Rudra Homam with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

A homam asks for samagri, a kund, the right mantras and someone who can keep the sequence going. That is a lot to arrange alone. A pandit leads the chanting and the offerings, and you sit for the ritual.

Why it is done

Rudra Homam is a fire ritual to Rudra, the Vedic form of Shiva. Traditionally it involves chanting from the Rudram text while offerings are made into the sacred fire. Many families hold it at milestones or when they wish to dedicate time to Shiva.

Who it is for

Families who worship Shiva; people marking a birthday, a new beginning or a festival; those following a family or guru's advice to hold a homam; households moving into a new space who want a Shiva-focused ritual.

When to do it

Many families choose Mondays, Pradosh, Maha Shivratri or Shravan, but customs vary. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options for your date and city, and your family's custom takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Rudra Homam works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the setup easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony: Sankalp, Ganesh pooja, kalash, havan with Rudra mantras, purnahuti and aarti. It runs about 1 hour with one pandit and follows a sequence of around 15 vidhi steps.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony: The standard sequence with longer chanting, more offerings and more time at each stage. It runs about 1.5 hours with one pandit and follows a sequence of around 22 vidhi steps.

Choose the standard if you want a compact homam. Choose the extended one if your family follows the fuller chanting or you have more guests.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself; the pandit can share a list before the day. The Vedic Rituals Havan Pooja Kit covers general havan essentials if you arrange samagri yourself; deity-specific items can differ, so check the list with your pandit.

The sequence

  1. Sankalp with your name and gotra
  2. Ganesh pooja to begin
  3. Kalash sthapana
  4. Lighting and invocation of the agni
  5. Rudra mantras with offerings into the fire
  6. Offerings of ghee and other items as per the tradition
  7. Purnahuti
  8. Aarti and prasad

How to prepare

  • Choose an open, ventilated spot for the homam
  • Keep a clean, level surface for the kund and kalash
  • Have a bucket of water nearby for fire safety
  • Check your building's rules on havan
  • Share your gotra and family tradition when booking
  • Decide whether you will use pandit-arranged samagri, a kit or your own items

Who should attend

The person or couple sitting for the homam, with other family members welcome to join. Traditionally the head of the household sits at the kund, but families decide.

Your tradition

Rudra Homam is common in South Indian traditions and also performed in the North. The chanting, offerings and sequence differ by region and lineage. Tell us your tradition when booking.

Safety

Homam involves an open fire. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.

Questions

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard ceremony and about 1.5 hours for the extended one, plus a little time to set up.

Is Rudra Homam the same as Rudrabhishek? No. Rudrabhishek is the ritual bathing of the Shivling. Rudra Homam is a fire ritual. Some families hold both.

Can it be done indoors? Many families do it in a ventilated space or courtyard. If your building does not allow open flame, speak to the pandit about alternatives.

What if our family follows a different sequence? Your family's custom takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.
