Bringing a new murti home is a happy moment with a lot of questions: where to place it, when to install it, and how to do it properly. A pandit leads the installation ritual, so you can place your murti with confidence.
Why it is done
Pran Pratishtha is the traditional ritual of installing a murti and invoking the presence of the deity in it. Many families hold it when a new idol is placed in a home mandir or a shop. Customs vary by tradition and by the material of the murti.
Who it is for
Families installing a new murti in a home mandir; businesses placing a deity in a shop or office; people who have moved a murti and want the installation done properly.
When to do it
Many families choose a muhurat from the panchang, often in the morning. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options. Your family's custom takes priority.
Choose your ceremony
About 1.5 hours for the standard ceremony; about 2 hours for the extended one
- Live video puja: A live video Pran Pratishtha works if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You arrange the samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the ritual easier. You will need the murti, the items and a helper at home.
- Standard: The standard ceremony: about 1.5 hours with one pandit and 14 vidhi steps. It covers sankalp, Ganesh and kalash worship, the bathing and invocation of the murti, aarti and bhog.
- Extended: The extended ceremony: about 2 hours with one pandit and 21 vidhi steps. It adds further rituals and a longer recitation. The pandit confirms what is included.
Choose the standard for a simple home installation. Choose the extended if your tradition expects a fuller vidhi.
Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself. Ask the pandit for the list, as items depend on the murti.

Your tradition
Which materials are installed in which way, and whether a murti of a certain size needs a fuller vidhi, differ across traditions. Tell us your tradition at booking.
Safety
The ritual uses diyas, incense and water. Keep flames away from curtains, children and pets, and handle the murti carefully when bathing it, since it can be heavy or slippery.
