Rituals for ancestors carry a lot of feeling, and a lot of detail: tarpan, pind, the order of offerings, and a day that has to be set aside. A pandit leads the vidhi so the family can concentrate on remembrance.
Why it is done
Pitru Dosh is a term used in traditional astrology for a chart indication linked to ancestors. Many families respond with prayers and offerings in remembrance of their forefathers, such as tarpan, pind offerings and a havan. Views on this differ, and chart-based questions are best taken to your family's astrologer.
Who it is for
Families whose astrologer has suggested a ritual for ancestors; households who want to honour their forefathers through the traditional rites; people unsure how to begin and who want a pandit's guidance.
When to do it
Many families choose Pitru Paksha, Amavasya or another date from the panchang, but the right day depends on custom and chart. Please ask your astrologer. The pandit can suggest muhurat options. Your family's custom takes priority.
Choose your ceremony
About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 4 hours for the extended one
- Live video puja: A live video Pitru Dosh Puja works if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You arrange the samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the ritual easier. Keep a helper at home for the water offerings and the havan.
- Standard: The standard ceremony: about 2 hours with one pandit and 18 vidhi steps. It covers sankalp, remembrance of the ancestors, tarpan, pind worship, a havan and closing offerings.
- Extended: The extended ceremony: about 4 hours with five pandits and 20 vidhi steps. With five pandits, the mantra recitation can be shared and carried out in fuller form. The pandit confirms what is included.
Choose the standard for a family-sized ritual. Choose the extended if your astrologer or elders have asked for a fuller recitation with several pandits.
Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself. Items for tarpan and pind vary by custom, so ask the pandit for the list if you are arranging them yourself.
The sequence
- Purification and sankalp with the family's lineage details
- Ganga jal and lamp lighting
- Remembrance and invocation of the ancestors
- Tarpan with water and sesame, as per custom
- Pind offerings and worship
- Ganesh and kalash worship
- Navagraha worship
- Havan with the family around the kund
- Closing offerings, a prayer for forgiveness, and visarjan
How to prepare
- Speak to your astrologer, and tell the pandit the details of the lineage
- Note the gotra and the names of ancestors you wish to remember
- Keep a clean area for the tarpan with water and a tray
- Keep a fire-safe spot with ventilation and water nearby
- Decide who will sit for the main rituals, as per your family's custom
- Decide whether you will use the pandit's samagri or arrange items yourself
Who should attend
Usually the head of the household or the sons and grandsons, but families decide this for themselves. Relatives can join for the closing prayers.
Your tradition
The rites, the items and who sits for them differ across regions and communities. Some families prefer a pilgrimage site, such as Gaya, for pind offerings. Tell us your tradition at booking.
Safety
Havan and diyas involve an open flame. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas. Water offerings can make floors slippery, so keep a tray and cloth ready.
