Mangala Gauri Puja with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

Mangala Gauri comes with a fast, a thali, a katha and a pooja, and first-time observers often wonder about the order. A pandit leads the vidhi and the katha, so you can focus on the offerings.

Why it is done

Mangala Gauri Puja is a traditional vrat dedicated to Parvati as Gauri, observed on the Tuesdays of the month of Shravan, mainly by women in Maharashtra, North India and some other regions. It usually includes a pooja, a katha and offerings. Customs vary by region and family.

Who it is for

Women observing the vrat, including newly married women keeping their first Mangala Gauri; families who like to gather for the katha; people living away from home who want a pandit to guide the pooja.

When to do it

Families usually hold it on a Tuesday in Shravan, in the morning. The Shravan dates differ between calendars, so your pandit can confirm the days for your city and tradition. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 2 hours for the standard ceremony; about 3 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Mangala Gauri Puja works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the diya or havan easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony with 26 steps led by one pandit: purification, Ganesh and Gauri pooja, the main Mangala Gauri pooja, the katha, mantra recitation and aarti. A good fit for a small household or first-time observer.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony with 39 steps, also led by one pandit: the standard sequence with a fuller set of rituals, a havan and more time at each stage. Suits a family that follows the fuller vidhi.

If you want the essential pooja and katha, start with the standard. If your family follows the fuller vidhi, choose the extended.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

The sequence

  1. Purification and lamp lighting to begin
  2. Sankalp with your family's details
  3. Ganesh and Gauri pooja
  4. Kalash sthapana
  5. Navagraha pooja
  6. Main pooja of Mangala Gauri
  7. Listening to the Mangala Gauri katha
  8. Mantra recitation
  9. Aarti and pushpanjali
  10. Prasad and closing prayers

How to prepare

  • Keep a picture or idol of Gauri or Parvati and a clean altar
  • Keep the offerings your family traditionally uses, such as flowers, fruits and sixteen items of shringar if your custom includes it
  • Choose a clean, level place for the pooja
  • Keep diyas ready and a safe spot for them
  • Decide in advance whether you will use pandit-supplied samagri or arrange items yourself
  • Keep light food for opening the fast if you are fasting

Who should attend

The woman or women observing the vrat; family can join for the katha and aarti, and families decide this for themselves.

Your tradition

Marathi, North Indian and South Indian households observe the vrat differently, including the katha version, the offerings and the number of Tuesdays. Tell us your tradition and language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

Safety

Fasting is a personal choice and not suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant, unwell or on medication, speak to your doctor first. Diyas and havan, if included, involve an open flame, so keep them away from clothing and curtains.
