If an astrologer has suggested a Mangal shanti puja, the planning questions arrive fast: what the ritual involves, how long it takes, and what to arrange. A pandit leads the vidhi and explains each stage, so you can concentrate on the ritual itself.
Why it is done
In Vedic astrology Mangal (Mars) is one of the nine grahas, and a Mangal shanti puja is a traditional ritual of prayers, mantra recitation and a havan directed to it. Families usually choose it on their own astrologer's advice, sometimes before a wedding. This is a ritual of prayer and observance, not a guaranteed remedy for any chart condition.
Who it is for
Families who have been advised by their astrologer to perform a Mangal shanti; people preparing for a wedding who want the ritual done first; households who follow graha shanti traditions.
When to do it
Many families choose a Tuesday, the day associated with Mangal, or a date their astrologer suggests, but practice varies. Please consult your family's astrologer for chart-based questions; our pandits can suggest muhurat options and will follow your family's custom.
Choose your ceremony
About 3 hours for the standard ceremony; about 4.5 hours for the extended one.
- Live video puja: A live video Mangal Dosh Nivaran Puja works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the diya or havan easier.
- Standard: The standard ceremony with 26 steps led by one pandit: preparatory pujas, navagraha invocation, Mangal mantra recitation, havan and closing prayers. A good fit for a family doing the ritual in a compact format.
- Extended: The extended ceremony with 39 steps, also led by one pandit: the standard sequence with more detail, longer recitation and additional rituals, which may include symbolic rites your tradition follows. Suits a family that follows the fuller vidhi.
If your astrologer has not specified a format, the standard is a reasonable start. If you have been advised to do a fuller ritual or your family follows the fuller vidhi, choose the extended.
Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself. Mangal pujas use specific items, so confirm with your pandit what you need to arrange.
The sequence
- Purification and lamp lighting to begin
- Punyahavachan and auspicious invocations
- Sankalp with your family's details
- Ganesh and Gauri pooja and kalash sthapana
- Navagraha pooja
- Pooja of Vishnu and the deities your tradition includes
- Mangal mantra recitation
- Havan with the family around the kund
- Aarti, pushpanjali and prasad
How to prepare
- Ask your family's astrologer about any specific date, mantra count or symbolic rites they recommend
- Keep a clean space where the pandit can sit and the family can gather
- Keep a fire-safe spot ready for the havan, with ventilation and water nearby
- Check your building's rules on havan in common areas
- Decide in advance whether you will use pandit-supplied samagri or arrange items yourself
- Keep the details the pandit may ask for: names, gotra and date of birth
Who should attend
The person the ritual is performed for, with the head of the household or parents. Others can join for the havan and aarti; families decide this for themselves.
Your tradition
Mangal shanti is done differently across traditions, including the mantras, the count of recitation, the symbolic rites and the daan. Tell us your tradition and any astrologer instructions when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.
Safety
Havan and diyas involve an open flame. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.
Questions
How long should I plan for? About 3 hours for the standard ceremony and about 4.5 hours for the extended one, plus setup time.
Will this fix a problem in my chart? No ritual can promise an outcome. Families choose it as a traditional observance, and chart-based questions are best taken to your family's astrologer.
Is it only for people before marriage? Not necessarily. Many families choose it at other times too. Your astrologer can advise.
Can we change the mantra count or rites? Your astrologer's or family's instructions take priority. Share them when you book.
Can we do it on video? Usually yes. You arrange the samagri and a safe fire spot, and the pandit leads on video.
