Mahavidya Strotam Paath with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

A stotra paath needs the right text, the right pronunciation and someone who can lead it. A pandit recites and guides the paath, so you can sit and listen or follow along without worrying about the order.

Why it is done

The Mahavidyas are a group of ten goddesses honoured in Shakta traditions, and a stotra paath is a recitation of hymns in their praise. Families choose it during Navratri, Gupt Navratri or when they want a devotional recitation. It is a prayer and observance, not a promised outcome.

Who it is for

Families who follow Shakta or Devi traditions; devotees observing Navratri or Gupt Navratri; people who want a recitation-based pooja rather than a havan.

When to do it

Many families choose Navratri, a Friday, an Ashtami or a date from the panchang. Your pandit can suggest a muhurat for your date and city. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 1.5 hours for the standard ceremony; about 2 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Mahavidya Strotam Paath works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the diya or havan easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony with 20 steps led by one pandit: invocation, sankalp, pooja of the Devi, the stotra paath, aarti and prasad. A good fit for a family sitting.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony with 30 steps, also led by one pandit: the standard sequence with a fuller set of rituals, more time on the pooja and a longer closing. Suits a family that follows the fuller vidhi.

If you want the essential paath, start with the standard. If your family follows the fuller vidhi or the paath is part of a bigger observance, choose the extended.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

The sequence

  1. Purification and lamp lighting to begin
  2. Ganesh invocation
  3. Sankalp with your family's details
  4. Kalash sthapana
  5. Invocation of the Mahavidyas and Devi pooja
  6. Recitation of the Mahavidya stotra
  7. Aarti and pushpanjali
  8. Prasad and closing prayers

How to prepare

  • Keep a picture or yantra of the Devi or the Mahavidyas, if your family uses one
  • Keep flowers, fruits, incense and the items your family offers
  • Choose a clean, quiet place where everyone can sit and listen
  • Keep a safe place for diyas
  • Decide in advance whether you will use pandit-supplied samagri or arrange items yourself
  • Ask your pandit which stotra text they will recite and share your own if you have a preference

Who should attend

The household members or those the paath is performed for. Others can join to listen and for the aarti; families decide this for themselves.

Your tradition

The text, the order of the ten Mahavidyas and the accompanying rituals differ by tradition and region. Tell us your tradition, preferred text and language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

Safety

Diyas involve an open flame. Keep them on a stable heat-safe surface, away from curtains, children and pets.
