Janmashtami has a lot of moving parts: the jhula, the bhog, the fast, and a pooja that traditionally builds towards midnight. A pandit leads the vidhi so you can focus on dressing Bal Gopal and being with family.
Why it is done
Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Krishna and is observed on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight in Bhadrapada (Shravana in some calendars). Many families keep a fast, decorate a cradle and hold a pooja around midnight, the traditional hour of the birth. How it is observed varies across regions and communities.
Who it is for
Families who keep Janmashtami at home; households with a Bal Gopal or Laddu Gopal; first-time hosts; people living away from family who want a pandit to guide the pooja.
When to do it
Many families hold the main pooja at midnight; others choose a morning or evening time. The date and the nishita timing depend on the panchang, so your pandit can suggest a muhurat. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.
Choose your ceremony
About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.
- Live video puja: A live video Krishna Janmashtami pooja works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the diya or havan easier.
- Standard: The standard ceremony with 24 steps led by one pandit: purification, Ganesh invocation, sankalp, pooja of Bal Gopal, aarti and bhog. A good fit for a small household.
- Extended: The extended ceremony with 36 steps, also led by one pandit: the standard sequence with more deities invoked, a fuller shodashopachar pooja and a longer closing. Suits a family that follows the fuller vidhi or hosts guests.
If you want the essential pooja around Bal Gopal, start with the standard. If your family follows the fuller vidhi or relatives will join, the extended gives more time.
Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.
The sequence
- Purification and lamp lighting to begin
- Pooja of the kalash and invocation of Ganesh
- Sankalp with your family's details
- Invocation of the deities of the household
- Main pooja of Bal Gopal with abhishek and shringar
- Offerings, including bhog and the traditional sweets
- Havan, if your family's custom includes it
- Aarti, pradakshina and prasad
How to prepare
- Keep Bal Gopal's idol, a small cradle or jhula, and clean clothes and ornaments for him
- Keep the items for abhishek, such as milk, curd, honey, ghee and Ganga jal, as your family uses them
- Prepare the bhog your family offers, such as panjiri, makhan-mishri or other sweets
- Choose a clean, level place for the altar
- Decide on timing (midnight or earlier) and tell the family
- Decide in advance whether you will use pandit-supplied samagri or arrange items yourself
Who should attend
The household members, including children, who often enjoy the jhula and aarti. Families decide who sits for the main rituals.
Your tradition
North Indian, Vaishnav, Maharashtrian (with dahi handi), Gujarati and South Indian families observe Janmashtami differently, including the timing and the bhog. Tell us your tradition and language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.
Safety
Diyas and havan involve an open flame. Keep them away from curtains, children and the cradle decorations. If you are fasting, keep to what is comfortable for your health.
