Karwa Chauth with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

Karwa Chauth day is full: the fast, the sargi, the thali, and a worry about whether you are doing the evening pooja in the right order. A pandit leads the vidhi and the katha, so you can focus on the thali and the moon rather than on the sequence.

Why it is done

Karwa Chauth is a one-day vrat observed on the Chaturthi of the dark fortnight in Kartik (Ashwin in some calendars), mainly by married women in North India. Traditionally the fast is kept from sunrise or moonrise-linked timings until the moon is sighted, with a pooja, the Karwa Chauth katha and an offering to the moon. Customs differ widely between families.

Who it is for

Women observing the vrat, including first-time observers; newly married women keeping their first Karwa Chauth; families or neighbours who like to gather for the katha; people living away from family who want a pandit to guide the evening.

When to do it

The pooja is usually held in the late afternoon or early evening before moonrise, and the fast is opened after chandrama darshan. Moonrise time changes by city and year, so your pandit can confirm the timing for your location. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Karwa Chauth pooja works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the diya or havan easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony with 15 steps led by one pandit: purification, Ganesh invocation, sankalp, the main Karwa Chauth pooja, the katha and aarti. A good fit for a small household or a first-time observer.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony with 22 steps, also led by one pandit: the standard sequence with a fuller set of upachars, more time on the pooja stages and offerings, and a longer katha and closing prayers. Suits a family that follows the fuller vidhi or hosts a group.

If you want the essential pooja and katha, the standard is enough. If elders expect the fuller vidhi or several women will sit together, the extended ceremony gives more time.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself. The Vedic Rituals Karwa Chauth Kit packs the essentials if you want to arrange samagri yourself without the shopping list.

The sequence

  1. Purification and achman: the pandit and family prepare to begin
  2. Ganesh invocation and a lamp lit to start
  3. Sankalp: your family's details and the intention of the vrat
  4. Invocation of the deities and the Karwa Chauth pooja with the thali and karwa
  5. Pati pujan, as your family's custom includes it
  6. Listening to the Karwa Chauth katha
  7. Aarti and pushpanjali
  8. Moon sighting and the arghya, once the moon is visible
  9. Opening the fast, then bhog and prasad

How to prepare

  • Keep the thali ready: karwa, diya, sindoor, roli, rice, and the items your family traditionally uses
  • Choose a clean, level spot for the pooja and a view or terrace access for moonrise
  • Note the moonrise time for your city and keep the family informed
  • Have a sieve or chhalni and the diya ready for the moon sighting if your custom includes it
  • Decide in advance whether you will use pandit-supplied samagri or arrange items yourself
  • Keep water and the food for opening the fast ready nearby

Who should attend

The woman or women observing the vrat; traditionally spouses and family join for the moon sighting, but families decide this for themselves. Guests are welcome for the katha and aarti.

Your tradition

Customs vary across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi families, including the sargi, the exact katha version, whether water is allowed, and how the moon is offered arghya. Tell us your tradition and language when booking so we can match a pandit who follows it.

Safety

Fasting is a personal choice and not suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant, unwell, diabetic or on medication, speak to your doctor first, and families should follow what is comfortable. Diyas also involve an open flame, so keep them away from clothing and curtains.

Questions

How long should I plan for? About 1 hour for the standard ceremony and about 1.5 hours for the extended one, plus setup time before moonrise.

Can the pandit come in the evening? Many pandits are booked around moonrise on Karwa Chauth day, so book early and share your preferred time. The pandit can help you plan the pooja around the moonrise time for your city.

We are a first-time observer. Which option should we pick? The standard ceremony covers the pooja and katha and is a comfortable start. Your pandit can explain each stage as it happens.

What if our family follows a different katha or sequence? Your family's custom takes priority. Share it when you book and the pandit will follow it where possible.

Can we do it on video if we are away from family? Yes, a live video version is usually possible. You arrange the thali and samagri, and the pandit guides you through it.
