Hayagriva Homam with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

A homam has many steps, and families are often unsure about the setup, the offerings and the mantras. A pandit takes charge of the vidhi so you can sit by the fire and take part.

Why it is done

Hayagriva is a horse-headed form of Vishnu associated with knowledge and learning in the Vaishnava tradition. Many families, especially students and teachers, offer prayers to him through a homam, often at the start of a school year or on Hayagriva Jayanti. The ritual is a traditional offering, not a guarantee of any outcome.

Who it is for

Students and their parents at the start of a school or college year; teachers and scholars; South Indian and Vaishnava families who follow the practice; those who want a traditional homam with a pandit.

When to do it

Many families choose Hayagriva Jayanti, which falls around Shravana Purnima, or a Thursday or Shravana nakshatra day, but customs vary. The pandit can suggest a muhurat for your date and city, and your family's custom takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Hayagriva Homam works well if family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You arrange the samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes the setup easier.
  • Standard: The standard homam: ganesh pooja, sankalp, Hayagriva invocation and homam with purnahuti, about 15 steps with one pandit.
  • Extended: The extended homam: the standard sequence with longer recitation and a fuller set of oblations, about 22 steps with one pandit.

If you want the essential homam, start with the standard. If you want a longer recitation or your family follows the fuller vidhi, choose the extended homam.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to arrange them yourself; the pandit can share the list in advance.

The sequence

  1. Sankalp: the pandit states the purpose and your family's details
  2. Ganesh pooja to begin
  3. Kalash sthapana
  4. Invocation of Hayagriva
  5. Lighting the homa agni
  6. Oblations with mantras
  7. Purnahuti
  8. Aarti and prasad

How to prepare

  • Choose a ventilated area with a stable, heat-safe surface for the homam kund
  • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby
  • Keep the study books or tools of the person you are doing it for, if your family offers them at the altar
  • Share your tradition, for example Smarta or Vaishnava, and your language
  • Let the family know the muhurat and who will sit for the homam
  • Decide whether you will use pandit-supplied samagri or your own

Who should attend

The family and the student or learner, if the homam is for a student. Others can join for the aarti and prasad.

Your tradition

The mantras, the form of the homam and the offerings differ across Smarta and Vaishnava traditions and by region. Tell us your tradition when booking.

Safety

This ritual involves an open flame (havan or diya). Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.
