Ganesh Chaturthi Puja with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

Ganesh Chaturthi at home means an idol, decoration, guests and a pooja that needs the right sequence. A pandit leads the pranapratishtha and the worship so the family can host without worrying about the steps.

Why it is done

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birthday of Ganesha, celebrated on the Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada. Many families install an idol at home and worship it for one, three, five, seven or ten days before visarjan. Customs differ by region.

Who it is for

Families who install a Ganesh idol at home; housing societies and neighbours who hold a small shared pooja; first-time hosts who want a pandit-led sthapana.

When to do it

The festival follows the panchang each year, with the pooja usually done at the madhyahna muhurat of Chaturthi. Your pandit can suggest muhurat options. Your family's custom takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video version works well if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You arrange the samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes it easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony: about 21 steps over roughly 1 hour with one pandit, covering sankalp, invocation, worship with offerings and aarti.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony: about 32 steps over roughly 1.5 hours with one pandit, with a fuller worship and more offerings.

Choose the standard for a home sthapana. Choose the extended for a larger gathering or a family that follows the fuller vidhi.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself.

The sequence

  1. Purification and sankalp
  2. Kalash sthapana
  3. Pranapratishtha of the idol
  4. Worship with sixteen offerings
  5. Offering of modak and flowers as per custom
  6. Aarti
  7. Prasad distribution

How to prepare

  • Clean the space and prepare a raised base for the idol
  • Bring home the idol and keep it covered until the muhurat
  • Keep flowers, durva grass, modak and fruits ready
  • Keep a safe place for the aarti diya
  • Tell the pandit how many days you will keep the idol
  • Decide whether you will use the pandit's samagri or your own

Who should attend

The household, led by the head of the family. Children and guests can join for the aarti.

Your tradition

Maharashtrian, Goan, South Indian and North Indian households differ. Ask us about visarjan, which is usually arranged separately. Share your custom when booking.

Safety

The ritual uses diyas and incense. Keep lamps on a stable surface, away from curtains and decorations, and keep children and pets at a safe distance.
