Ayush Homam with Pandit Ji

Home visits: Gurugram and Delhi. Live video puja: anywhere in India. Kits ship across India separately.

Families often want a homam for a birthday or milestone, but the questions pile up: which mantras, what samagri, what timing. A pandit leads the homam from start to finish so you can sit calmly around the kund.

Why it is done

Ayush Homam, also called Ayushya Homam, is a fire ritual traditionally held on milestone birthdays and to mark an important point in a person's life, with prayers for health and a long life. It is an act of devotion and gratitude, not a guarantee of any outcome. Practice varies by region.

Who it is for

People marking a birthday or milestone year; parents performing it for a child; families holding it as part of a larger celebration such as shashtipoorti.

When to do it

Many families hold it on or near the birthday, in the morning, often by the birth nakshatra or a muhurat from the panchang. Your pandit can suggest options for your date and city. If your family has its own custom, that takes priority.

Choose your ceremony

About 1 hour for the standard ceremony; about 1.5 hours for the extended one.

  • Live video puja: A live video Ayush Homam works if the family is abroad or in another city: the pandit leads on video and you follow along at home. You will arrange samagri yourself, and a helper at home makes it easier. A helper at home makes the havan easier.
  • Standard: The standard ceremony: one pandit, about 1 hour. Opening pooja, sankalp, the homam with its offerings and a short closing. A good fit for a smaller family gathering.
  • Extended: The extended ceremony: one pandit, about 21 vidhi steps and 1.5 hours. A fuller sequence with more prayers around the homam.

Choose the standard for a short birthday ceremony. Choose the extended if your family follows the fuller vidhi.

Choose 'With samagri' and the pandit brings the ritual items. Choose 'Own samagri' if you already have them or prefer to buy them yourself. The Vedic Rituals Havan Pooja Kit covers the general havan items. Your pandit will tell you if anything specific to this homam needs to be added.

The sequence

  1. Sankalp with the person's name, gotra and details
  2. Ganesh pooja to begin
  3. Kalash sthapana
  4. Prayers to the deities of the homam
  5. Lighting of the sacred fire
  6. Offerings into the fire with mantras
  7. Purnahuti
  8. Aarti and prasad

How to prepare

  • Clean the area and keep a level, fire-safe spot for the kund
  • Share the person's name, gotra and birth nakshatra with the pandit
  • Keep ghee, a bucket of water and a ventilated space ready
  • Keep a clean surface for the kalash and pooja items
  • Decide in advance whether you will use a samagri kit or arrange items yourself

Who should attend

The person the homam is for, if they are able, and their parents or spouse. Family and friends can join for the aarti and prasad.

Your tradition

Mantras and offerings differ across South Indian and North Indian traditions. Tell us your tradition and language when booking.

Safety

Havan involves an open flame. Use a stable heat-safe surface, keep the space ventilated, keep water nearby, and keep flames away from curtains, children and pets. Follow your building's rules on havan in common areas.
