Festivals are punctuation. The everyday is the sentence. A single diya at dusk is the smallest possible practice and, for most people we speak to, the only one that survives a busy quarter.
Why dusk
The changeover from day to evening is when a house is at its loosest — bags dropped, nothing started. Lighting a lamp there gives the evening a beginning instead of letting it dissolve into screens.
Keeping it going
Store the diya, wicks and oil in one place, within arm's reach of where you light it. Practices die from friction, not from disbelief.
- Cotton wicks in a small jar, already rolled.
- Oil or ghee in a bottle you can pour one-handed.
- A saucer underneath so nothing needs scrubbing later.
